#GoodNews: Family Covers Sidewalk Swastikas With Chalk Art

A family in Southern California has turned a symbol of hate into a chance to spread positivity. While walking home from the farmer’s market in her Santa Monica neighborhood, Taylor Coffman noticed a dozen swastikas drawn with markers on the walls and sidewalks. So she decided to do something about it.

Taylor and her husband, Zachary Lupetin grabbed their two-year-old daughter, July, and the sidewalk chalk she uses to draw flowers, hearts and butterflies and got to work covering the swastikas. The mom and her toddler drew over the graffiti, creating colorful pictures and uplifting messages like “Love Lives Here.” Taylor was determined to make sure no one felt uncomfortable and disturbed by the swastikas like she had.

Lupetin captured the transformation and shared the video on TikTok, where it was viewed nearly 500-thousand times in a week. Coffman hopes their project will help remind people of how good the world can be. “Imagine a world where every time you saw an act of hate, you matched it up with an act of love in your own community with your own family or, you know, even a chalk drawing outside your house,” Coffman says. “Imagine that world. I stay alive to live in that world.”
