I read recently that your taste buds change every seven years or so. That makes sense to me because amazingly, as of late, I've been able to stomach pickles. While I don't order burgers and sandwiches with them I don't gag like I used to when I get something with pickles on it. Same thing with peas. I'm more tolerant of them than I ever thought that I would be.
Recently my wife brought home not only a box of Twinkies but a box of Hostess Cup Cakes. Presumably one of the last of their kind in Cleveland. I remember eating Twinkies with great joy. I loved everything about them. The spongy vanilla flavored cake, the sweet creme, the crackle of the plastic wrapper, the licking of the waxed cardboard sleeve that they came with to get the last of the cake and sweet, sweet yummy creme. Same with the Cup Cakes. That inexplicably hard chocolate, the white icing scrolls, the chocolate cake, sweet creme. Hey, was the creme in the cup cakes the same as in Twinkies?
thanks Christian Cable
My older son and I split a package of Cup Cakes last night and afterwards he said to me soberly, "Dad...I don't see what the big deal is". I had to agree with him. So mediocre. I felt more bad for the folks out of work than I did about the actual Cup Cakes and Twinkies going away. We then split a package of Twinkies. Same deal. "Good...but not great", he said.
I hope and pray that those laid off at Hostess and their related bakeries finds work quickly. Thanks for the memories.
